  Exceptional Kids:
Gifted and other Exceptionalities

Time – there never seems to have enough for ourselves, for our children, for our family.  Where does it all go?

When we learn our child is gifted, wouldn’t it be nice to have an extra few hours a day handed to us?  That would truly be a gift.  Enjoy your winter holiday season.  Try turning off your phones, celebrate in your traditions, and watch how time slows down just a little.

Happy Holidays.

An "Exceptional" Quote:

“It takes courage to be oneself ... to be different and to like oneself despite the difference.  This courage takes time to develop, and it must be done during that stage
in life when conformity seems most important."
Judith Halsted (2002)

"We've always done it that way." :  November 2010

This quote ...

"We've always done it that way." (Gruskey & Bailey, 2010) was in the opening remarks of a workshop I attended recently.  It reminds me that without taking the risk needed for change, we cannot grow.

Without making the time needed to learn, we cannot succeed.

Without creative teachers, our children cannot learn to think outside the
box.

An "Exceptional" Quote:

“Strong, independent thinkers, they (teachers) forge ahead with novel plans and create options that allow gifted students to progress.”  Barbara Gilman (2008)

Navigating, Negotiating, Nurturing:  October 2010

Navigating, negotiating and nurturing are concepts that parents of
gifted children encounter daily.

Take some time, this month to sit in your child’s bedroom while they are
asleep.  Marvel at the wondrous things your child has achieved and quietly applaud your advocacy efforts.  Remind yourself that their childhood is fleeting and try to savor their simple pleasures and discoveries.

An "Exceptional" Quote:

“Gifted children are not perfect. They, like other children, must be expected to have flaws and limitations, to aggravate and disappoint as well as bring joy.”                p. 196 Alvino (1985)

With summer behind us, and school well under way, the next part
of the year focuses on you.  Each month it is my hope to share some ‘Exceptional’ resources.

If you know of other families that would be interested in receiving this
monthly newsletter, please encourage them to send me their email address so that I may add them to the list.

Have an ‘Exceptional’ September!

An "Exceptional" Quote:

“...it’s easy for gifted students to lose sight of the fact that not everything that can be measured matters, and not everything that matters can be measured."  p. 133 Deslile (2002)
